Could B1 Beer Benefit Your Brain?

Scottish ministers want brewers to add vitamin B1 to beer to reduce the risk of brain disease in heavy drinkers.

"
This seems to be suggesting that putting Thiamine in beer will make it acceptable to drink six or seven pints and it won't rot your brain!
"
Mike Benner, CAMRA
Vitamin B1 (also called thiamine) is thought to help prevent diseases such as Wernick's encephalopathy, which has been linked to heavy drinking.

Scientists are looking into the benefits of adding the vitamin to beer, but even if they decide it's a good idea, the plan is likely to face stiff opposition from many ale lovers.

Mike Hastings of the British Beer and Pub Association has already put his two-penneth in, arguing that it could change the taste and style of much loved beers valued for their natural ingredients. Of the people who might benefit, he says, "they are extreme alcoholics and should be discouraged from drinking at all."

Mike Benner of the Campaign for Real Ale adds, "This seems to be suggesting that putting Thiamine in beer will make it acceptable to drink six or seven pints and it won't rot your brain!"
