18/11/02 Otters in the
city
"People are more
likely than ever to catch a glimpse of one the UK's most charismatic
creatures", says Simon Lyster of the The Wildlife Trust. No, he's
not talking about Pierce Brosnan (although you've a job to avoid the
smug Bondster's mug right now) someone even more slippery has been
making appearances in cities all over the UK... The otter is making
a comeback!

Simon Lyster, The
Wildlife Trust | There's been
over 100 recent sightings of the river dwelling cuties in the most
unlikely waterways. Areas such as Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds and
Newcastle are the latest otter des res'.
Conservationists reckon regeneration has made people care
more about inner city rivers and canals and the water quality has
improved, bringing otters back to areas which used be too dirty for
them to live.
Now
they're pressuring local authorities to improve otter commuter
networks by installing otter walking ledges under bridges, resting
platforms and steps so the little fellas can climb down to weirs in
comfort. Aww.
